Gonerfest 8 Recap

When I initially looked at the Gonerfest line-up this year, and saw that the last band playing the Murphy’s day show was Reverend John Wilkins, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  What I was not expecting was an actual Reverend with a complete gospel band.

There are very few bands that captivate the entire crowd at Gonerfest, but when I walked inside of Murphy’s to use the restroom, the bar was mostly empty.

Big Legal Mess, the same label that released Jack Oblivian’s Rat City, released Reverend Wilkins’ album You Can’t Hurry God.  You can order it on their website, or pick a copy of it up from Goner Records.

For the most part the event was so crowded that I didn’t take too many photos (and being an amateur at best in regards to photography, many of them I took didn’t come out that great).  Here are a few I snapped.

Shannon and The Clams

Missing Monuments

The Manatees

In addition to the Reverend John Wilkins, another pleasant surprise at this year’s Gonerfest was Sydney, Australia’s Royal Headache.

Royal Headache released their self titled debut in the U.S. this month.  Their sound reminds me a lot of the Reigning Sound.  These guys are garage rock with soul.  Try to get this song out of your head…

The closing ceremonies start at 2:30 at Goner Records with Two Tears from New York and Jam Messengers from Sao Paolo, Brazil and Volcano, Hawaii.

The comedown party is at The Bucaneer tonight or you can hit the Lamplighter for Bare Wires, Data Drums, and Modern Convenience.   The Lamplighter show starts at 11:00 and is $5.
