Ampline began as an instrumental band, but in recent years have added vocals to their sound. I’m not sure if it’s just because they are a three piece, but they reminded me a lot of early Dinosaur Jr. (think Dinosaur and Green Mind).
Huntsville, Alabama’s Daikaiju were absolutely nuts!!!
Throughout the show, I could not help but be reminded of Daikaiju’s fellow Alabama band Man or Astroman? (who will be playing the Hi-tone on October 13). There were elements of surf and metal in their sound, and the band’s guitarists (Secret-man and Rock-man) worked their way through the crowd encouraging crowd participation.
Also, you have to respect a band that has butt plugs as part of their merchandise.
Gonerfest 8 starts today with the opening ceremonies kicking off at 5:30 pm at the gazebo on the corner of Cooper and Young with Limes and Jack Oblivian! Want to help Jack Oblivian, Limes, and Harlan T. Bobo go to Europe this fall? Then visit their Kickstarter page by clicking the link on this sentence.
Be sure to get to the Hi-tone early for tonight’s Gonerfest show, as Memphis’ own Sex Cult goes on at 9:00pm. Their debut 7″ Errand Boy will be released on September 26th on Goner Records. I’m particularly excited to see Ty Segall and Hans Condor tonight! Click here for a full Gonerfest schedule.
